Humana Will No Longer Hire Smokers
Healthcare seems to be a buzzing topic in the news, yet one healthcare company is causing controversy in their hiring practices.
Humana in Arizona has invoked a new policy which will not allow the company to hire anyone who smokes. This is a recent trend which has been occurring with companies as they are trying to promote a healthier workplace and are trying to “lead by example”. Many other companies have followed Humana’s lead by implementing incentives for employees to quit smoking or adding charges to those who do.
While those who are opposed to smoking think that this is a great change, some believe that this is discrimination. According to a representative from the law office of Snell & Wilmer, smoking is not a category that is protected under the law. The representative also said that companies are trying to regulate more of what their employees do outside of the work place for example, limiting them to what they can and cannot post on their facebook or twitter.
Companies are beginning to implement saliva testing to test for nicotine in a person’s system. As of now, this testing is optional but those who do submit themselves to the testing received more healthcare benefits than those who refused to take the test. Those who would not take the test believe that it is an invasion of privacy and were not willing to submit their samples.
These types of programs are not limited to just smoking and substance abuse but it is also common for companies to offer incentives for employees to slim down or go on a diet. Companies can now look at an employee’s body mass index or cholesterol levels and offer incentives for them to make healthier life choices.
While not all states are as lenient about these types of policies they seem to become more and more popular.
