Authenticity in Philidelphia

By , January 28, 2010
We had a huge breakfast that included french toast, bacon, sausage, Canadian ham, and a bowl of fruit. Naturally, we had to soak it all with real maple syrup, butter and jam. If we keep going at this rate, we won’t be able to walk out the door of our cheap hotel in Philadelphia.

Today we think will be a pretty sedate day, not like yesterday, were we ran up the same steps that Rocky Balboa did in Rocky, and yes, we did the obligatory jump in the air and took photos of ourselves doing so, but there wasn’t any Rocky Theme music to help us out. Then we went to the Philadelphia museum of Art, which turned out to be free! But, that means the museum is crowded also. As we entered we did see the contribution box, so we each put in a $10, which is what it would’ve cost us if we had to pay. The museums collections is okay, they did have some very interesting originals, like Picasso’s Sunflowers and the Water Lilies. We actually liked the sculptures which were placed through out the museum, and we were surprised to see ‘The Thinker’; the detail on this work of art was exquisite. One thing that made us curious was the authenticity of The Sunflowers, because we could, if we wanted to, go right up to it and touch it, if no one was looking. I mean we were only millimeters from something worth  millions.

After an hour at the museum, we walked across to the other side of the city to check out the World War II Becuan Submarine, it was the second one built. The U.S.S Olympia war boat was there too. It cost us $9 each to see the boats, but for my husband, it was well worth it, as for me, bleck, boats don’t float my boat. We got to go inside the submarine and walk around the mid-deck, this really gave us a feel for what kind of conditions the sailors had to work with. My husband would’ve died to have the bunk that was on top of the torpedo’s. The captain’s quarters wasn’t shabby, and the Olympia seemed a bit on the luxury lines side, almost like they converted a luxury liner into a gunship.

So, yes, today we’ll just take it easy and enjoy the cafe next door and maybe go see a movie.

New York is Beyond Alive

By , January 26, 2010
We love New York, at least that’s what our t-shirts say. Our t-shirts can now be bought for 9 shirts for $10 at this shop near Times Square. Two years ago, when we were here, the shirts were 5 for $10! The recession must be really hitting the Big Apple hard.

Since we spent more time in Europe than we planned for, we only had two day to visit the fine city, luckily, it’s not our first time, but if it was, two days just doesn’t cover it, because there is a huge array of things to do and see, you need at least a full week. The city has its own life, its own feel or vibe, if you will, which all needs time to appreciate and soak in. We felt it the moment we walked off the bus. All the noise, the sheer presence, the smells, the fantastic people, all the skyscrapers that the height alone will knock you on your butt, the food, oh the food is so good, the parks, the sea of Yellow cabs, the top hotels of New York – luxurious and rich, the shows, the lights, basically, the whole city is alive, bustling and on the move; being here give you a new sense of self, like a second chance, a possibility, a dream. New York is the best place to visit and all I can say is I wish we lived here.

We like to find a busy corner and people watch. It’s a great mass of organised chaos all happening right in front of us. Then our next favorite people watching place is Central Park, the tranquility is almost a cultural shock, but the tall skyscrapers in the background always let you know that you are still in New York City. With only having two days, we didn’t waste anytime, we ate, drank, danced, ate, drank, danced and only slept for an hour or two, we figured there will be plenty of sleep when we get home.

Shakespeare in the Park in New York’s Central Park

By , January 19, 2010

Theatre in New York is something that attracts and entertains visitors from all over the world. It is also something that many of the city’s residents enjoy on a regular basis. The New York festival Shakespeare in the Park is an annual event that is equally inviting for locals and tourists who will enjoy easy access from a hotel Central Park. This is because it occurs in the open air of Central Park and is presented free to the public. This makes it almost irresistible to anyone near or within reach of the Big Apple.

Every summer the Public Theatre, formerly known as the Joseph Papp Public Theatre, produces at least two major productions for Shakespeare and great theatre fans. This summer the plays will be The Winter’s Tale, which will be directed by Michael Greif and The Merchant of Venice, which will be directed by Daniel Sullivan. Al Pacino is one of the big names on the cast list for this year and he will be joined onstage by Lily Rabe, Max Wright, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. These actors will perform in both plays.

These plays will be presented in repertory for eight weeks of great theatrical entertainment. Previews for these performances will begin on Wednesday June 9 and they are scheduled to run through Sunday, August 1st. For individuals planning to attend one of the performances, it is important to remember that there is a limited number of free tickets and lines for them can become pretty long. They can be obtained in the Great Lawn of Central Park and the large lines will often guide potential theatre goers to the right place. Other major film and Broadway stars to have appeared in a Public Shakespeare production include Kevin Kline, Jimmy Smits, Oliver Platt and Meryl Streep among many others.

A True New York Experience

By , January 13, 2010

Our arrival to New York was through the Port Authority Bus Terminal. After going through the borough of Harlem, we found our hotel, which was only a few blocks away from Times Square. We were so eager to see the sights, we didn’t even unpack, we left the hotel and stopped for lunch at a ‘Subway’ fast food restaurant; we got a foot long subway for $5.00! What a bargain. Then we headed to Times Square and our first stop was the M&M store. All three stories were dedicated to everything M&M. We then walked to Grand Central Station. I’m sure we looked quite the tourist as we gawked at the stunning beauty of the building; it’s impressive to say the least. We got what is called a Frosty drink and sat down to people watch for a almost an hour. We didn’t even know an hour went by. New Yorkers are great to watch.

We then headed on over to the Chrysler Building, which is another impressive building, we really liked the marble inside, everywhere. We then questioned whether we wanted to go up the Empire State Building, it looked like it was going to rain, but instead of guessing, we pulled out our Iphone and checked the weather forecast for New York. It was going to rain soon, but will be sunny tomorrow, so we headed back to our hotel, down Madison Avenue and it began to pour down hard. We made it back to our wonderful New York USA hotel dripping wet and the staff helped us dry off a little before we took the elevator up to our room.

We were up bright and early the next morning, we thought the jet-lag would hit us by then, but I guess our excitement about being in NYC over-rode that aspect of traveling abroad. We took a jog around Central Park to make sure that the jet-lag stayed away. It was great to join in with all the New York joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists. We felt like a part of the synergy of what is New York. We passed by the Dakota Building where John Lennon was shot, by Strawberry Fields and then by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis reservoir. We got breakfast from one of those street vendors and that really made us feel we were in NEW YORK CITY, especially when the vendor asked us in a very rude manner what we wanted. We smiled so big, I think the vendor thought we were nuts.

So far, we’ve been here one night and a half a day and we can’t believe were actually here! Our next goal was to find a taxi and hope he’s just as rude and over-charges us, otherwise we’d feel cheated from a true New York experience!

Boat and Dive

By , January 8, 2010

Well when you make your plans to get a room at one of the hotels Key Largo Florida has waiting for you it better include a dive. Most of what you can do in Key Largo is water sports. All sorts of boating like sailing, sea fishing, water skiing and just plain old speed boating are some things to do in the area. If you like some of the other water top sports like wind surfing, jet skiing, kayaking and swimming I am sure you will have a great time with that activity too. Some of the most spectacular activities and adventures in Key Largo have to do with Scuba Diving.

There are endless companies to pick from when it comes to Scuba Diving in Key Largo. It is the diving capital of the world after all. The John Pennekamp park is first state park of the U.S. that is all underwater. There are some military ships that were intentionally sunk off the coast with the hatches open so that divers could explore them as they eroded on the sea bottom. The Coast Guard Cutters named Duane and BIBB are 329 foot long ships that were sunk in 1987. You can actually see the ship in the water from high up in the sky. Other impressive sights to see while snorkeling or scuba diving are the beautiful dolphins, sea turtles, eels, eagle rays and other fish. The coral reefs and lit up with brilliant colors and creatures.

After you have exhausted yourself with endless sun and fun you can relax in some of the best pubs for cocktails. The sea food is some of the best you will ever have. There are plenty of places to relax, eat and drink while you are looking out over the water, and onto a magnificent sunset. Because it is a bit more quiet than Miami or Key West, it is a great get away or honeymoon for the romantic couples.

The Importance of Search Engine Optimization for Small Business Owners

By , January 8, 2010

In today’s struggling economy, small business owners need all the help they can get to stay ahead of the game.  They must consistently stay on top of the best customer service and marketing techniques, while still maintaining a reasonable, and often tighter than comfortable, budget.  One of the key methods that business owners of all levels use to stay connected with clients and potential customers is through a website; however, with hundreds of new websites being created and added every day, it’s easy to get lost within the pages of the World Wide Web.

This is where search engine optimization services come in to play. Search engine optimization is a process of improving the ranking and volume and quality of traffic to your website.  Not only will this increase your visibility on search engines such as Google and Yahoo, where millions of people are searching daily, but it will also make your site more accessible for those who are searching for it.  Many marketing agencies will usually offer different packages available to fit the price range of even the smallest businesses.  And you know you will be getting your money’s worth as you can begin to see results within a week or two.

If you are in the process of getting your business off the ground or are just trying to keep it there, search engine optimization is one of the best ways that you can attract new clients and give your business the boost it’s been looking for.  Don’t wait for the customers to come to you, put your business out there and show that them all that you have to offer.  What better way to show the world the importance of your business than through priority ranking and search engine optimization.

Memphis Onstage in New York

By , January 7, 2010

Sometimes vacations happen unexpectedly and plans are made at the last minute. That is, if any plans are made at all. And while this might seem disturbing to those with little to no spontaneous inclinations, Martha was more than happy to accept her friend Carrie’s invitation to accompany her on a work related trip to New York City. Martha had never before been to New York and was incredibly excited to visit this great American city. In addition, she typically displayed the spur of the moment type of adventurous personality so Carrie was relatively sure she would accept the last minute invitation. She was originally going to bring her boyfriend of two years, however, and for reasons unknown at the time of invitation to Martha, they had recently broke up and Carrie needed the company.

Two days later they were sitting on a plan heading into La Guardia airport. As they began their descent Martha, like the child that dwelled in and frequently broke free from her heart, began searching for the famous landmarks New York is known for across the globe. She thought she made out Lady Liberty’s torch but Carrie laughed and told her they were coming in from the wrong side. She then promised that they could take a visit out to the statue and Ellis Island during their stay.

After the two had comfortably settled into their room in one of the boutique hotels New York Carrie told Martha she had a surprise for her and showed her two tickets for Memphis, the new Broadway musical set in the chaotic and frequently turbulent 1950s and about the creation of rock and roll. It turns out Carrie’s now ex boyfriend had bought them for their trip. That reminded Martha that she had no idea what happened between the two of them. Carrie said she would tell her later in the evening over a glass of wine in the hotel lounge. Until then, she wanted to forget about him and enjoy their evening. Predictably, Martha was happy to go along with Carrie’s wishes.
